The Uffizi Gallery, the most visited Italian museum, which hosts masterpieces by Giotto, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, is a compulsory sight to visit during your stay in Florence. Discover the history of Italian painting during a private guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery.
The museum was born around 1581 thanks to Francesco I de’ Medici, who began to exhibit “paintings, sculptures and other precious things” in the eastern wing of the Uffizi. Then, he commissioned Bernardo Buontalenti, his court architect, to design the Tribune where Francesco exhibited classical sculpture from the Medici’s collections. Already by 1591 there were those who wanted to visit these spaces and asked for a permit to enter the Uffizi to admire rare and precious objects, which were on display there. In 1769, the Uffizi opened to the public and today they are the oldest European museum.
The guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery allows us to discover transitions in painting occurred between the thirteenth and the seventeenth centuries, between the Middle Ages and Caravaggio. Moreover, the collection of classical sculpture exhibited in the Gallery, makes tangible the dialogue between Italian painting and Greek and Roman art.
Considering that the Uffizi collection is particularly vast, together we can plan an itinerary different from this traditional tour. It can be focused on a period, an artist or on an artistic movement that interests you most.
